About This Chapter
In this short scene, the young narrator complains to his father that he is hungry and wishes he could be alone. He tells his father to feed him before he leaves, but the father refuses to do so, saying that the young man is a complete alcoholic. The young narrator, however, does not drink, and he does not think that his father is an alcoholic. He asks his father why he is wasting all his food, and the father replies that it is the men like him who cause hit and run for poor and unfortunate souls, and that they should be ashamed of themselves for living like that. He then asks if his father drank water, which he says tasted "weird." The young man says that he did not drink at all, but that he drank water that tasted "a little weird" . The narrator then asks whether his father has scraped his hand, which the father says is a sign that he has been drinking. He says that if he were to get hurt, it would make things harder for him.
